PHSE – Careers Welcome

At The Bemrose School , Career focused learning is a continuous programme for our students inside and outside of the classroom. We place strong emphasis on ensuring that students are fully rounded people, suitably qualified and equipped with the skills required for the world of work and indeed a happy and successful life. Our Careers Provision starts from Year 1 in our Primary phase right through to our Year 13 students who attend our Sixth Form. Our success is proved by our decreasing NEET figure which currently stands at 2% collated from Post 16 data. Post 18 NEET figure stands at 0%.  Contributory factors include:

  • An intense and wide-ranging careers curriculum which allows students to explore all form of skills, which supports them in fulfilling their true potential.
  • Regular work on Careers in the PSHE programme of study, which includes modules on ‘Employability and Aspirations’ in Years 7-11 and’ Labour Market Information and a Ready for Work programme’ in Years 9-13.
  • Work Experience for all Year 10 students in March/April and for all Year 12 students in June/July.
  • We have a working partnership with Toyota, Bombardier and the British Army which creates a wide range of opportunities for our students.
  • Detailed preparation for interviews, CV writing, filling in College, Apprenticeship and UCAS applications.
  • CV Workshop for parents
  • A mock interview event for all Year 11 students, with outside employers in December.
  • A Year 9 ‘Options Interview’ with internal staff and outside employers – in preparation for students choosing their GCSE options.
  • Regular career talks by local employers and organisations.
  • Visits to FE and HE Providers
  • Careers Fairs held within the local community and in house.
  • Work Experience parent workshop held within the local community
  • Visits to and participation in competitions run by local industries.
  • Working towards the Career Mark Award
  • Careers Interviews take place with a qualified Careers Advisor
  • Individual guidance on subject choices Year 11/12/13 students choosing college and University courses
  • Career and Aspiration days are run throughout the Primary, Secondary and Sixth form phase.

Primary Careers Curriculum

Primary careers education is now a fundamental part of our school and we are proud to offer this to our young people. As the Careers Lead, I create, facilitate and deliver the primary programme, personally and through collaboration and support from with various companies i.e. the Army, Our Future Derby, Learn by design, Bombardier and Toyota.

Year 1 – ‘When I grow up I want to be’ (introduction to careers and aspirations)

Year 2 – Helipad and Hospital Tour at the Royal Derby (meet and greet with NHS Staff)

Year 3 – What is my career? (Guess my career workshop)

Year 4 – Linking curriculum subjects to careers (creating awareness of why subjects are important

Year 6 – Career and Aspirations Week (a combination of company and university visits, teamwork and leadership activities, parental involvement, career talks)

Schemes of work:

Students in Year 7 – 11 all take part in 6 weeks of PHSE lessons within a half term, which focuses on Careers, Employability, Next Steps and Work Experience.

Year 7

Week 1 – What is Careers Education? What is a career?

Week 2 – Discovering aspirations and ideal career paths.

Week 3 – Create a Kudos login and learn how to get the most out of the career’s website.

Week 4 – Introduction to the Careers Library.

Week 5 – Create a Fast Tomato account and learn how to navigate the website. Evaluate the careers section on the school website.

Week 6 – Create an individual learning plan and an introduction to Employability Skills- gain the understanding of the link between skills and employment.

 

Year 8

Week 1 – What is Careers management? Outline and plan a visual personal career pathway.

Week 2 – Explore Kudos and career website to support the development and creation of the student’s career pathway.

Week 3- Explore the factors that influence people when making career decisions. Discuss social mobility, stereotypes, community and cultural expectations.

Week 4 – The importance of positive decision making.

Week 5 – Review Career websites and discuss how they can be improved to support students. What would students like support with? Is it accessible for the masses?

Week 6 – Why is planning for the future important?

 

Year 9

Week 1 – Introduction to Labour Market Information, locally, nationally and globally and what it means for career professions and industries in the future.

Week 2 – Refresh Kudos credentials and research in to a range of different career sectors and explore the different jobs that link to curriculum subjects.

Week 3 – Explore the Careers Library and research in to the range of different post 16 opportunities.

Week 4 – Discover the Skills and Abilities that are required in the workplace.

Week 5 – Teamwork skills and Leadership types.

Week 6 – Team work project – focusing on problem solving. Allowing leadership to be demonstrated.

Week 1 – Why is Work Experience important? What are the expectations of going into the workplace?

Week 2 – Explore the skills set of the students and see how they can use their skills to benefit the employer.

Week 3 – Health and Safety in the workplace

Week 4 – Preparing the students for their first day of their placement and allow them to contact their employer in regards to – travel arrangements, uniform, start time etc.

Week 5- To familiarise the students with their work experience diary. Support them as they complete their pre-work placement journal and a Health & Safety assessment.

Week 6 – Complete an overview of employability and company expectations.

 

Year 11

Week 1 – Explore post 16 opportunities i.e. at College, Training and/or Apprenticeship provider.

Week 2 – Discover the careers that are available which link to the subjects that the students are currently studying.

Week 3- Students to take part in a CV Workshop and begin to create their own CV.

Week 4 – Prepare students for their mock interview that will take place with outside employer. I.e. The importance of positive body language

Week 5 – Mock interview skills and practise.

Week 6 – Review the importance of post 16 options and begin to apply for their next destination

 

Year 12 and 13 receive a Careers programme which runs consecutively across their two years of study within our Sixth Form.

Year 12

Week 1 -Exploring post 18 options

Week 2- Planning ahead – discovering opportunities for career development.

Week 3- Exploring Kudos, identifying entry requirements for University, Apprenticeship and job opportunities.

Week 4 – Exploring Kudos, identifying entry requirements for University, Apprenticeship and job opportunities.

Week 5 – CV Workshop

Week 6 – Students to create a new CV or update their previous one with work experience, rewards and achievements.

Week 7 – Students to take part in a ‘Cover Letter workshop and begin to develop their own.

Year 13

Week 1 – Research and gain an understanding of the range of apprenticeship pathways.

Week 2 – Research and gain an understanding of the range of opportunities at university.

Week 3 – Students to explore and build their knowledge of the UCAS process.

Week 4 – Students to begin building their UCAS Profile and learn about the importance of personal statements.

Week 5 – Personal Statements to be created

Week 6 – Personal Statements to be completed for universities.

Week 7 – Prepare students to a visit to a Higher Education Fair.
